The American Dental Association and the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry note that it is beneficial for the first dental visit to occur within six months of the appearance of the baby's first tooth but no later than the child's first birthday
The first dental visit is usually very simple; we do an examination for normal growth and development, discuss fluoride needs and recommend oral care products. We also check for problems, such as baby bottle tooth decay. For toddlers, we examine their teeth and gums, check for cavities and other problems, and clean their teeth. Your toddler may be evaluated for habits such as prolonged thumb or finger sucking. The bottom line is that children's dental needs differ, and it is important that you as their parent meet those needs of your little ones.
Before your child's first visit, it is important that you talk to your child. Try and remain positive, and let her/he know that going to the dentist is an important and exciting step in growing up. If you yourself are scared of the dentist, then please leave the explaining to us! Children can pick up on our fears, and we want your child's view of the dentist to be a positive one. |
